Fluoride, Education, Anniversary – October 11, 2007

Segment 1: The Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District this morning voted to proceed with a narrowly defined study regarding implementation of fluoridation. The $18,000 study will focus exclusively on engineering and cost issues, not the appropriateness or health impacts of fluoridation.

To explain the district’s action, our guest (by phone) will be HBMWD Director Aldaron Laird.

Segment 2: The Eureka Teachers Association and Eureka City Schools have been at an impasse over salary negotiations since May, but resumed talks this week.

In the studio to explain the teachers’ demands will be Patrick Riggs, president of the Eureka Teachers Association. He’s asked not to appear at the same time as the school district representative, so he’ll go first, presenting the ETA side.

After a break, we’ll talk to Gregg Haulk, superintendent, Eureka City Schools to get and responses and the administration’s position.

Segment 3: After another break, we’ll talk by phone to Tom Harris, interim president, College of the Redwoods about issues facing C/R: accreditation, demolition and reorganization with possible layoffs.

Segment 4: Finally, Arcata is ramping up preparations for its 150th Anniversary next year. We’ll talk by phone with Jenny Bowen, director, Arcata Chamber of Commerce about the Anniversary and the Arcata 150th logo contest.

As always, we want your participation, (707) 786-5104, studio@khum.com.
